Advancements in the treatment of head and neck cancers are improving local and regional tumor control rates. However, patients who have these cancers still might experience frequent and severe acute toxicities that result in considerable suffering. Quality of life issues related to this issue include weight loss, depression, difficulty talking, sleep disturbances and hospitalization. The speakers will discuss solutions that address these challenges and improve the patient treatment experience.

After participating in the session, you will be able to:

  • Review tumor control rates for head and neck cancers.
  • Discuss issues that can present with head and neck treatment setup.
  • Evaluate adverse effects that arise from head and neck treatment.
  • Identify solutions to improve head and neck treatment setups.

This presentation will give a comprehensive review of advancements in 3-D printing technology in radiation therapy, including bolus fabrication and brachytherapy applicators. Attendees will gain a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by practitioners with regards to current bolus techniques and surface brachytherapy applicators. The presentation also will review how advancements in technology using 3-D printing in the fabrication of medical devices can solve these issues.

After participating in the session, you will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges faced by practitioners regarding current bolus techniques.
  • Discuss bolus techniques used with surface brachytherapy applicators.

CIVCO Workshop: Patient Customization in SBRT (.75 credit)

Higher doses, less damage and fewer treatments continue to position stereotactic body radiation therapy at the forefront of radiation oncology. Contouring dose with tight margins, targeting tumors without damaging surrounding tissue and destroying tumors in minimal sessions place additional focus on the movement of organs and patient positioning. This presentation will discuss how immobilization, tumor tracking and respiratory management are continuing to develop to meet the ongoing growth and advancements in SBRT treatments.

After participating in the session, you will be able to:

  • Discuss SBRT treatment parameters.
  • Describe the margins and critical structure constraints for SBRT.
  • Review immobilization, tumor tracking and respiratory management uses as they apply to SBRT.

Treating the breast with external beam radiation has challenges specific to optimal breast support, reproducibility, comfort and dignity. The speaker will discuss how the Chabner XRT® Bra addresses these challenges. This support device was designed by a female radiation oncologist for use during simulation, planning and radiation treatment.

After participating in the session, you will be able to:

  • Discuss setup and immobilization for breast treatment.
  • Review the needs for reproducibility, comfort and preservation of patient dignity.
  • Review possible solutions to meeting the needs of breast treatment.
